The Yuri's Night celebration on April 12 will be marked at several places across Canada. This annual "World Space Party" is growing in popularity. Yuri's Night is a celebration of humanity's achievements in space, with hundreds of parties and events held around the world each April.

Yuri's Night parties are planned for Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Kitchener-Waterloo and Toronto.

Yuri's Night was started in 2001 as a result of a declaration at a United Nations' Space Generation Advisory Council Conference the year before. Yuri's Night commemorates the flight of Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961 and the first flight of the Space Shuttle on April 12, 1981.

In 2011, the 50th anniversary of human spaceflight, over 100,000 people attended 567 officially-recognized events in 75 countries on all 7 continents, while tens of thousands more watched the 12-hour live Yuri's Night Global Webcast.

Yuri's Night events combine space-themed partying with public education and outreach.
