It should not have come as a surprise, after all everyone had been warned for months that the budget would see cuts. The fact that the government is spinning the cuts as "savings" still doesn't change the facts, this budget is a tough one for many and in particular the space sector.
Today's budget offered $5.2 billion in cuts and we now know that 19,200 civil servants will be cut over the next three years with the government asserting that 6,000 of those will be through attrition.
Today is budget day and the government has been clear that this budget will be about cuts to many programs. What does it mean for the space sector?
According to Treasury Board of Canada Main Estimates for 2012-13 released yesterday the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) is estimated to see its budget reduced from $424.6 million from 2011-12 to $363.2 million representing a 16.9% decrease in its budget. The CSA budget was already scheduled to be reduced to $371.1 million, a decrease of 14.4% according to the CSA Report on Plans and Priorities 2011-12 estimates released last year.
The government announced today after holding a roundtable discussion in Charlottetown, that further pre-budget consultations with business, academic and sectoral leaders will take place in the New Year at venues across the country, details of which are still forthcoming.
